Music has always been a part of my life in so many ways and when we had children, it just naturally became a part of our daily routine with them and became a special time to quietly be together before saying goodnight. We've sung "You Are My Sunshine" to Bray since she was a baby and, eight years later, we still sing it to her as we tuck her in to bed every night. When Henry came along, we had to add a few tunes to our lullaby repertoire because music seemed to be the only thing that soothed him when he got into those fussy baby tantrums, and I needed something longer than a few lines.
I remember the moment I realised Henry was a little music man. He was about six weeks old and I was trying so hard to calm him down and nothing was working. I started singing our wedding song (To Make You Feel My Love) and he became mesmerised, stopped crying, and had a big, satisfied smile on his face. It's a moment I will always remember because I felt like we connected in a new way. I had learned something about him. So, I kept singing. I started singing songs that meant something to Scott and I throughout the years, and slowly each of these songs began to take on new meaning as non-traditional lullabies. Many of "our" songs turned into love songs about our children, and it made me realise that music is always evolving, and meaning is all about perspective and what you are going through at any given time.
Henry is two now and he's still our little music man that never puts down his guitar and can't help but dance when he hears music. We still sing to him every night, but now he makes requests (Jingle Bells is a top choice for him all year round), and insists that all three of us sing to him. I look forward to this time every night and it's a sweet way to connect as a family. We still sing "You Are My Sunshine" to both kids before tucking them in and they always know this is the last song before it's time for sleep.
Below is a list of our favourite lullabies with lyrics I love from each. Today, they are songs that soothe them and lull them to sleep. When Bray and Henry are grown, I hope when they hear these songs, they still bring comfort to them if we are not together. I hope these songs remind them that their family is their anchor, and they can always come home.
Beautiful Boy - John Lennon (Henry's love song)
Close your eyes. Have no fear. The monster's gone, he's on the run, and your mama's here. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy... Before you cross the street, take my hand. Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy. Darling, darling, darling, darling, Henry.
You are My Sunshine - Johnny Cash (Bray's love song)
You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You make me happy when skies are grey. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my Bray Bray away.
To Make you Feel My Love - Adele
When the rain is blowing in your face and the whole world is on your case, I could offer you a warm embrace, to make you feel my love. When the evening shadows and the stars appear, and there is no one there to dry your tears, I could hold you for a million years, to make you feel my love.
Can't Help Falling in Love With You - Elvis Presley
Wise men say only fools rush in. But I can't help falling in love with you. Shall I stay? Would it be a sin, if I can't help falling in love with you? Surely as the river flows to the sea. Darling, so it goes, some things were meant to be. Take my hand. Take my whole life, too. For I can't help falling in love with you.
I Could Hold You (In My Arms) - Ray Lamontagne
When you came to me with your bad dreams and your fears, was easy to see, you'd been crying...I could hold you in my arms; I could hold you forever.
Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
Well, I've been afraid of changing 'cause I've built my life around you. But time makes you bolder, even children get older. Well, I'm getting older, too.
Yours - Russel Dickerson
I came to life when I first kissed you. The best me has [my] arms around you. You make me better than I was before. Thank God I'm yours. The worst me is just a long gone memory. You put a new heartbeat inside of me. You make me better than I was before. Thank God I'm yours.
Lean on Me - Bill Withers
Lean on me, when you're not strong. And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on...you just call on me [Henry], when you need a hand. We all need somebody to lean on.
Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
I don't quite know how to say how I feel. Those three words are said too much; they're not enough. If I lay here, if I just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world?
What's your favourite song to sing to your little ones? Let me know in the comments - I would love to add to our list!
Just because it's so darn cute, I'll leave you with a video of Bray singing "Beautiful Boy" to Henry.
